How to find if your would be employer is good

Tags: , ,

With graduates flowing in like flood into the job market and blindly joining companies based on money and market name of the company they really do end up in a mess lot of times and end up cribbing about the company all the time… Many people don’t tend to see these simple things to understand the status of the company they are joining

So here are 4 simple tips to find if the company is good enough

1) Stationery

You reach the office for an interview and you need to sign in and the receptionist doesn’t have a pen in the desk, well nothing could be a more worse impression for a company than this, Obviously going to the interview you need to carry a pen but doesn’t give any reason for the reception desk to not have one. It shows how careless the company reception desk is in turn pointing to bad management which doesn’t even care about the front desk which is the first impression (obviously inside it is going to be worse) or there could be such stringent control over stationary (like signing for each pen/pencil you take) that the reception desk which has the most probability for missing pens as few visitors by mistake would carry it off with them while signing in/out. Obviously you wouldn’t want to join a company which doesn’t even let go stationary for free… You would have rather not wanted to enter the company campus at all if u don’t find a pen there. Coming from middle class families lot of students/new joinees would think nothing wrong in a pen with a chain to it, but believe me if billion dollar revenue company doesn’t want to spend 100 Rs a day on lost pens from stationary I don’t think it is worth the effort to even go for an interview there.

2) Restrooms

Do I need to explain on this factor? Well if you really did not know about this earlier, the state of the restroom is how your company will really be. The maintenance of the restroom in other words the dirtiest place in the company will show you how well the company is maintained. If you find dirty toilets you sure know people in that company don’t like to clean up after creating a mess. If you find unclean water, broken door hinges/locks, unclean floor you just get to know that not only people of company individually don’t have any clean habits but the company as such itself doesn’t care about cleaning up any mess properly. If there are not enough janitors in the company then obviously that’s what the quality department of the company will be like and the state of projects in there.

3) Interview

Yes Yes Yes, an interview is not only a place for them to assess you but also a place for you to assess your future employers. This is a known fact but no one really does it. Few traits like asking text book questions or asking too many personal questions neglecting the area of interview, it means they are careless about your interview and are unprepared. Text book questions usually mean that the interviewer has herds (yes correct HERD) of people to interview and is semi automating the process, a very bad thing for any one. It just shows how much important you are in the company. Usually there should be an interview panel and not just one person to interview you or your interview should be broken into sections as personal, technical etc… If not then you are being recruited for head count!!!

4) POST interview/Joining process

Once you like the interview the company etc… There may be the joining process, lot of paperwork and lot of people in enthusiasm and seeing the companies market value don’t read it completely or understand it completely. If the HR who is explaining it to you forgets to inform you about person related clause like having a bond or notice period while quitting etc… Then you are in an awkward situation because you have accepted the offer orally and are sitting in front of the HR and you don’t feel comfortable with the clauses which the HR did not inform you orally but you stumbled upon when reading the fine print. PLEASE donot hesistate, just ask. But think harder on the offer again now as there may be many more hidden clauses. If you donot have a assisting HR then you are in a worse situation, again a point on how much important you are.

So these were just a few of the simple things you miss all the time when joining a new company.. Hope it helps.
